   In the comedy Schluck und Jau, A Joke Play in Six Processes, which premiered on 3 February, 1900, at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, Gerhart Hauptmann has two drunken vagabonds, Schluck and Jau, slip into the roles of the prince and his wife to the delight of a court party.

   Schluck und Jau was premiered on 3 February 1900 under Emil Lessing at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. The premiere, which was cast with Hanns Fischer as Schluck, Rudolf Rittner as Jau, Else Heims as Sidselill, Else Lehmann as Frau Adeluz and Max Reinhardt as Malmstein, was unsuccessful. Otto Brahm removed the joke play from the repertoire after thirteen performances. It was not until Max Reinhardt's production on 18 March 1915 on the same stage with Max Pallenberg as Schluck and Hans Waßmann as Jau that more than forty performances were given in the war years 1915 and 1916.
