Set design by Robert Edmond Jones (American scenic designer, 1887 - 1954) for the court room in Machinal (1928) written by the American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell (1885 - 1970), inspired by the real-life case of convicted and executed murderer Ruth Snyder, and produced under the direction of Arthur Hopkins, at the Plymouth Theatre, having run for 91 performances from Sep. 7, 1928 to Nov. 24, 1928. This Broadway premiere is considered one of the highpoints of Expressionist theatre on the American stage.
