The transformation. The Wrestling of a Human Being is Ernst Toller's first play. It was completed in 1918 and premiered the following year at the Berlin Tribune. After the premiere, which made Ernst Toller famous within a very short time, the play celebrated an extraordinary success with critics and audiences. According to Toller's own statement, Die Wandlung was played over 100 times in Berlin and around 35 times in Hamburg. The success of the work may have been related to the fact that it represented a revolution in the theatre in terms of content and form.
