Some scenes from The Emperor Jones written by the American playwright Eugene O'Neill (1888 -1953) and first staged on November 1, 1920, by the Provincetown Players at the Provincetown Playhouse, New York City, with Charles Sidney Gilpin playing the role of Brutus Jones on stage. It ran for 204 performances and was hugely popular, touring in the States with this cast for the next two years.

In November 1921, the Provincetown Players presented Eugene O'Neill's The Emperor Jones. This landmark drama marked the first time an African-American actor, Charles S. Gilpin, played the lead in a play produced by a white company.
