La Terre (The Earth, 1887) written by the French playwright Emile François Zola (1840-1902) and produced, under the direction of André Antoine, at the Theatre Libre, Paris, starring André Antoine, in 1900.
André Antoine (1858-1943) was one of the first modern directors, a bold experimenter who wanted to produce serious playwrights. He founded the Théâtre Libre in Paris in 1887 as an alternative to the melodramatic stage spectacle. The intention was to present new naturalistic drama that was not included in the repertoire of the theatres in power.
