Arme Henrik (The Poor Henrik), written by Gerhard Hauptmann (1862-1946) and performed at the Svenska teatern, Stockholm, in March 1904

Scenes from Arme Henrik (The Poor Henrik), written by the German playwright Gerhard Hauptmann (1862-1946) and performed at the Svenska teatern (Swedish Theatre), Stockholm,  in March 1904, starring Mr. de Wahl and Miss Astri Torseli. The play had not been a real success, neither in Germany nor in Stockholm.

Gerhard Hauptmann's fairy tale The Poor Henrik is based on a medieval legend from the 13th century. Knight Henry, who has betrayed the banner of the cross and lived in voluptuousness, has contracted leprosy, and can only be saved by an innocent maiden sacrificing her heart's blood for him. A young, innocent, infatuated girl, a childhood playmate, is also prepared to do this. Then the blasphemer regains his health—and the young girl becomes his wife.
