a- James Bolton and the Rev. Joshua Flewitt advance timorously to tie up Uncle John to the settee, as the misreading of a letter has caused everybody to think he is a dangerous lunatic.
b- Uncle John (Mr. Spencer Trevor) is so enraged by being treated as a dangerous person that he almost becomes one.
c- James Bolton brings news of Uncle John from the latter's bedroom. Dr. Dart, who is standing by, is also wrongfully suspected, for it is thought that he has poisoned his wife, and that he thirsts to do the same for his patients and friends.
d- The butler, James Bolton (Mr. Stanley Turnbull), on the downward path, which leads, in his case, to matrimony, for when under the influence of alcohol he signs a promise of marriage to a parlourmaid-a very serious mesalliance for a man so highly placed.
e- The trembling, fluttering little clergyman Flewitt has been mistaken for the "mad" uncle and has been pursued and captured by Sykes, an official sent to remove the "lunatic." Soon after the writer of the misread letter turns up and explains her odd way of conducting her correspondence, and all are friends again.
